Chapter 1 |

CONTEXT & PROBLEM

Many offices still lack convenient sorting solutions suited to modern interiors. Existing bins can look industrial or playful, cost too much in metal or plastic, or lose their shape and cleanliness when made from cardboard. Interviews with office users defined the right size, ergonomics, material performance and behavior cues.

OPPORTUNITY & SOLUTION

Opportunity: Packaging expertise could become a product-scale sustainability solution that makes responsible behavior visible and easy in daily office life.

Solution: Three recyclable corrugated-cardboard bins are clearly marked for plastic, paper and glass. Ergonomic openings, flexible arrangements and a plastic-free protective varnish support long use and easy cleaning. Assembly instructions and the Sorting ABC guide are printed directly inside the structure.

USER EXPERIENCE

The bins can sit in corners or along walls without dominating the interior. Clear labels and sorting cues help employees form and maintain correct habits, while simple setup makes the system easy for any office to adopt.

SUSTAINABILITY RESULTS

The structure is 100% recyclable, contains 85% recycled material and comes entirely from renewable sources. DS Smith’s circular-design assessment confirms an optimized supply chain and planet-safe approach, while the plastic-free varnish extends cleanliness and service life.
